The House That Love Built

April 25, 2019

The Ronald McDonald House is Alpha Delta Pi’s national philanthropy. Pi Chapter is affiliated with the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines, which serves families with children aged 21 or under who are receiving medical treatment at an area hospital. Walking through the front door of Des Moines’ newly renovated Ronald McDonald House is like walking into a neighbor’s home. Families are invited to help themselves to a cup of coffee, a hot meal in the kitchen, a comfortable place to sleep, showers, laundry facilities, and so much more. The atmosphere is comfortable -- a home away from home.

On April 9th, 2019, Pi Chapter held its 5th annual Alpha Delta Pie’s fundraiser, and brought in a total of  $4426.09 for the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines. This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our Iowa State and Ames communities who came out to enjoy a slice of pie, a tour of our chapter facility, and the opportunity to “pie a Pi.”

Alexa Long and members of the Philanthropy committee  were responsible for bringing this event to life. “Ronald McDonald House Charities means so much to me because we are providing a home away from home for families that don’t have energy or time to provide it for themselves,” said Alexa. This passion for service extends throughout the committee and across  the chapter. “Supporting this organization fiscally is rewarding, but it is especially touching to be able to volunteer at RMHC in their many homes around the country. Going to the different locations with my sisters and family, I have made some of my favorite memories,” said senior Olivia McAleer.

Having the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines close to Iowa State’s campus allows our sisters the unique opportunity to serve this house in addition to supporting it financially. Once a month, our sisters visit the RMH house and help out in whatever way possible: cooking, cleaning, decorating, etc.

This organization hits home personally for many sisters as well. Pi Chapter alumna and 2018-2019 Alpha Delta Pi Leadership Consultant Quinlan Moran’s family spent time at the RMH of Eastern Iowa. while her younger brother was in the hospital. “You never know how much you’re going to appreciate that support, love, extra resources, a place to call home, until it’s the only option you have. Having something to lean on during the darkest times in life makes a world of a difference. I came home to ADPi for so many reasons, but one driving factor was seeing the passion and drive my sisters have towards supporting RMHC, and the way they constantly serve selflessly with their souls. From that moment on, I knew I was right where I was meant to be in ADPi."

During the 2017-2018 academic year, Alpha Delta Pi chapters across the nation raised $1,344,838 for RMHC collectively. Over its 40 year partnership with RMHC, more than $14,000,000 has been donated. As Pi Chapter continues to bolster our philanthropic efforts, we look forward to adding a few more zeros to our total contribution. In the meantime, we will continue to follow our servant hearts and work to make lives of RMH families easier and happier.
